The first on-line course on Family and Media, promoted by the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross and Familyandmedia, with the production of Placting, is about to start.

It consists of 10 video lessons analysing the relationship between the family and the mass media, with a realistic, critical and positive look at the contents most used by the public: films, TV series, video games, social networks, current affairs, novels, etc. The aim is to create the right awareness among parents, family associations, teachers and educators, but also young people and students to suggest the correct way to responsibly build our relationship with the media.

The video lessons are presented by professors who are experts in the field of ethical and social communication, from a media education perspective, with an approach that is not only theoretical but also practical.

Many topics are examined. It starts with an analysis of the current situation of the relationship between family and media. It continues through a specific reflection on the two traditional media par excellence, TV and cinema, with a special focus on TV series. A video lesson is also completely dedicated to literary narration, useful to understand, for example, how reading the classics is a very effective way to train the mind and increase our capacity for empathy.

A special reflection is made on the representation of the family in news reporting, in order to understand the general framework in which it is placed by newspapers and magazines, in the daily news agenda.

Of course, among the media examined, the Internet could not be absent. The topic of the relationship between the family and the new media is seen in a constructive and positive way. In fact, the web can be managed responsibly and be an excellent medium for communicating and educating young people.

Special attention is also paid to video games. It is legitimate to speak of the ethicality of video games and their positive value: in fact, by playing games we are always obliged to make choices. In this way, video games accustom us to train our brains to always come up with the best solutions and find a successful strategy when faced with unexpected events or difficulties.

Finally, these video lessons are complemented by workshops, with practical exercises suggesting how we can make the best use of films, TV series and social networks to put forward personal and family values in an attractive but effective way.

The course is particularly aimed at parents, family associations, teachers and educators, but is open to anyone who wants to explore the complex but always very topical relationship between family, society and the media world. Initially a first course is planned in Italian, to be followed by an edition completely in English and Spanish. Registration is possible until 10 May. The course, on the other hand, remains active for registered users until 19 June.
